OLD TOWN HALL – FIREWATCH AND VIEWING TOWER

The new, Art Nouveau-style, spired town hall was built in 1901 in the place of the old medieval town hall. The building currently houses the Ráckeve District Court of Justice and a children’s library, and the Firewatch viewing tower was also opened in 2009, offering a unique experience for visitors of the Ráckeve region.

Did you know?

...that Hungary’s only surviving gothic Serbian orthodox church is found in Ráckeve.

Construction of the church was started by Serbian merchants who fled here from the invading Ottoman Turks in the second half of the 15th century.

The interior of the church is richly decorated: besides the rococo iconostasis, the walls are decorated with Byzantine frescoes, from pedestal to ceiling.

Floodgate of Tass

The Danube arm of Tass at the upper-end of the Csepel-Island was closed as the result of the works in 1870. The designers thought that if they lead the water output into the main bed, with its slim down they would be able to prevent the formation of the „fluvial icecork”, similar to the icy flood in Budapest in 1838.
