SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY

Did you know?

...that Hungary’s only surviving gothic Serbian orthodox church is found in Ráckeve.

Construction of the church was started by Serbian merchants who fled here from the invading Ottoman Turks in the second half of the 15th century.

The interior of the church is richly decorated: besides the rococo iconostasis, the walls are decorated with Byzantine frescoes, from pedestal to ceiling.

A valuable composition of medieval monuments is the so-called Serbian Orthodox Church and Monastery at Ráckeve, the most significant building of which is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

A legend, survived from the times of Ottoman Turkish occupation, has it that when a janissary pierced through one of the church’s icons with his weapon, he died on the spot as he exited the church. Because of this, the Turkish army did not destroy the Christian church. The pierced icon is today preserved at Orthodox Museum of Szentendre.

Interesting fact

On the 29th of August every year, on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the church gets packed to the last place with orthodox Serbians living in the area and coming from further away, too, to hold their annual gathering in the church.
